Life in the Box: Electric Car Shopping Update
EV update May 2025
A few years ago, I was shopping for a car and specifically Electric Vehicles (EVs.) I decided not to buy one, mainly because some of my friends had been warned of battery fires while charging, and their car dealers told them to park their cars outside. I shared some of my findings here on EIL in May of 2023.
Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to find news of EV improvements. With the Biden era behind us, where does the technology stand? Has the anti-Elon Musk movement stalled liberals’ embrace of electric cars? Mostly though, I want to know if these cars are safe to fill up at home.
I think the answer to that last question is, yes, you can plug them in at home and be pretty sure they won’t start a garage fire.
We know lithium batteries can overheat, and now many EV cars have a coolant system in place around the batteries. Whew!
As far as the political climate, while Tesla dealerships are magnets to protesters, there are lots of choices for EVs besides Tesla now.
The EV movement looks like it’s continuing, here and in other countries. These vehicles are not the answer to all our problems, and some of the articles I’m attaching will give more details.
One caution is that America’s power structure doesn’t have a lot of umph in the late-night hours when many people will plug in their vehicles. Another issue is the expense and limit of battery source materials—lithium especially. And pollution is created in making the batteries as well. Recycling the finished batteries? Not really figured out yet.
If you have the $40-thousand minimum, and are willing to put in the needed electrical outlets ($1500 +), then you have some good choices for electric vehicles now. Enjoy!
