La Fete by Malcolm Sutherland

La Fete

by Malcolm Sutherland

In this sketchbook-style animation, we hear the voices of a crowd and an accordion playing in the background. We are drawn into “La Fete Nationale” celebration in Montreal, Quebec as new figures appear on the sketch paper, and then slowly vanish. Not all of the figures are filled in, some just outlines, others half-bodied. The unfinished quality of the exquisite work reflects what it is like to be lost in a crowd, looking in all directions, and moving through a festival. Sutherland captures the atmosphere perfectly.

Sutherland has a collection of video work he calls his “theater” on this website: Movie Theatre
