Via Basel: Gratitude and Love Celebration

My tribe

Months ago as I was considering how to celebrate my 80th milestone an inner conflict emerged. Yes, a joyous and fun event was great, but the general economic, social, and political climate at home and all around with conflicts, wars and injustices were weighing heavily on me. My final decision from the heart was to go ahead. My rationale from the head went something like that: Even in the darkest times we need joyful events to lift our spirits and help us not only survive but strengthen our resolve and resilience to shine a light into the darkness. Along with my daughter Mandy we proceeded to plan, organize and finally bring it to fruition on the 14th of February 2026.

Now, a month later, recovering from the toll of physical and mental effects of all that went into making it happen, I have been rewarded with more blessings than I could imagine. Ninety of my family and friends gathered in the American Writers Museum in Chicago that evening for four hours of mingling, exploring exhibits, reconnecting and making new connections with different communities in my world, Basel’s World, along with delicious food and exotic deserts. There were speakers and stories told but the highlight was a video of my 80 years edited to 20 minutes, a brilliant, creative, and heartfelt gift from my beautiful daughter Mandy. She not only honored me but all who made me who I am and especially those who have left us. Rosalind her mom the artist, and Chris her brother, founder of EIL, were highlighted both in the video and in posters and materials exhibited. It was truly a festival of love, appreciation and memories enjoyed by all. It helped that Valentine’s Day was celebrated too. I was truly blessed to be in the midst of it all and will always be grateful for all who attended, those who couldn’t make it and those who have crossed to the other side.

Basel Al-Aswad, father of EIL founder Christopher Al-Aswad, is a yogi trapped in an Orthopedic Surgeon’s body. His loves in life include reading, writing, hiking, enjoying nature, meditation, and spending time with his large Iraqi family; now, semi-retired, he is exploring new avenues in medicine, education, public speaking, teaching, and social engagement.
