Artist Bio

Jim Barsness’s paintings incorporate drawing and collage, along with myriad cultural references from Bosch and Brueghel to Art Nouveau and Hindu Ornamentation, to create dense physical and metaphorical layers of visual complexity.He has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the Kohler Art Center, and the Boise Art Museum, among other institutions.His work is in numerous public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Yale School of Art Gallery Permanent Collection, the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and Neuberger and Berman.The subject of two career monographs and more than 15 exhibition catalogues, he has also been the recipient of several awards, including grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, and the Elizabeth Foundation.He lives and works in Athens, Georgia. Represented in San Francisco by Catharine Clark Gallery and in New York by George Adams Gallery.
