Artist Statement

The very first watercolor impressions that appeared on my easel were of Italy: a place I have journeyed to often, a place that embedded in me a deep sense of wanderlust and a heightened awareness of the impact that spaces and places can have on oneself. I also have traveled to Spain, Morocco, and Iran. In all of these travels were planted the seeds of my art. The sites that moved me became subjects for my watercolors.

I often refer to this collective body of watercolor work as “Impressions of Place”. I use the word “place” because it suggests the experience of having been within, or in the presence of, a particular site—something more personal and subjective than perhaps looking at an image in a book.

The process of painting a watercolor, of watching pigment and water flow and interact on paper as these impressions emerge, is very serene and somewhat meditative. The finished paintings at times become a springboard for another craft, that of writing, where I again connect to and celebrate the experience and memories of being within “place.”
