STREAM: Stand In The Sand by Twin Peaks

Some songs asked to be dissected, taken apart to watch the knobs and gears twist and turn, analyzed and then put back together again. Guitar effects examined, lyrics parsed, influences interpreted. But other songs, like “Stand in the Sand” by Chicago teen punks Twin Peaks, feel like they can only exist if you refuse to look under the hood. There’s nothing new or novel about this brand of straightforward skuzzy garage rock. And if you take “Stand in the Sand” and break it down into its component parts, you’re left with a fairly uninspired two minutes of music. Nothing more than meets the eye (or ear, in this case). But when those same parts are put together, there’s something mystifyingly magnetic about it, the sum greater than its parts. It’s a song that you’ll know everything about after the first time through, but that won’t stop you from wanting to listen to it again and again.
