MP3: Cara Falsa by OMBRE

Solo artist Julianna Barwick excels at creating ethereal, barely there semi-ambient songs that tend to seem less like songs and more like some sort of religious incantation echoing through an empty church. But on “Cara Falsa”, working with labelmate Helado Negro under the moniker OMBRE, Julianna has made her most “substantial” piece of music yet (at least in the sense that it doesn’t feel like it could dissipate into the ether at any moment). To be sure, the vocals and the empty space they fill still feel like a typical airy Julianna Barwick song, and the lyrics are mostly incomprehensible, but the tinny drums and plucky synth line (or is that an fx heavy guitar?) make this feel less like a monastery chant and more like the type of woozy pop tailor-made to soundtrack a slow and sticky summer night.
