Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by the plant kingdom and patterns in nature. My intent in these drawings is to capture the movement of growth and infiniteness in plant and animal life. I create space with collage and excise parts to build on line and detail. When using markers, I allow the bleed-marks from previous drawings to impress the direction of what will be next.

Botany books reference my work in the anatomy of plants along with seventeenth-century Indian miniature paintings with their vibrant, intense color and ornate geometric elements. I also look to Japanese flower design for elegant balance and composition. Above all, nature itself, cyclical in beauty and ever changing inform these drawings.

Like any living organisms, plants have unique individualities and rhythms; coincidentally I often think of people when making these (Overtones Gallery).
