Artist Statement

As long as I can remember I have been making pen drawings. I even sketch with pen instead of pencil. Pen drawings are being made for centuries. Egyptians, Sumerians and Romans used drawing material similar to the pens we use today. During the dark middle-ages monks enlightened the books they made with colourful characters and illustrations. All made as pen drawings. The great artists we know for centuries used pen drawings to make studies for their paintings. They then could make with few resources fast sketches for composition, light, perspective and substance expression. The sketches of Dürer, Leonardo da Vinci, Rafaël, Michelangelo, Rubens, Rembrandt and so many others, show that their pen drawings are a class of their own. All these artists are a great inspiration to me and I hope that I will ever come close to their level. As for today there are also numerous artists who make great pen drawings. Some make great illustrations in pen and ink in combination with digital aids like Photoshop, Painter or Illustrator.
