Artist Statement

Using techniques of exaggeration and distortion of form, my intention is to create a visual ‘peak shift’, a term given to the phenomena of neurological attraction that appears in both humans and animals to an extreme characterization of an object. I use themes taken from religious iconography specifically influenced by the Baroque period and it’s dynamic use of the human body, billowing cloud formations, the voluminous folds in fabric and architectural structures to depict a heightened version of reality. This hyper-stylized form is also found in modern day Japanese animation which has partly informed my painting style and is where I appropriated images exclusively for my ‘Hypermass’ series. This ‘peak shift’ acts as a jolt to the senses, allowing us to recognize how intensely real and visceral our direct physical relationship with our world really is. Adversely this distortion can also be seen as a form of escapism away from reality that can cause a numbing of the senses leading to the ‘death of affect’, my work explores this dichotomy. (bio)
